Food for Thought

by 6. July 2009 22:22

We christen this portion of our forum, “Food For Thought,” and extend a heartfelt THANK-YOU in advance to any and every person who chooses to take study. We want all viewers to know that the thoughts or views ever presented are sourced from multiple venues of experience: via mentored, or professionally realized from the collaborated efforts of the pageantry arts as well as instrumental music performance world’s most respected minds.

The motivation of every idea or subject matter presented through “Food For Thought,” will be directed with the intent of an author. Which is to allow the audience participant a journey that during and by the finale offers to any individual both introspective perspective relatable to the realities of current day performance trends and avaunt guard processes for achieving “Performance Excellence.”

In the event when an idea shared evokes query, please feel free to respond/share; this is the only way that WE will continue to grow. All we ask is that you pose any question or reaction with respect and tact.

It will be our compass to develop healthy, organic structure to this forum, and from the exchange we guarantee an expansion of perspective to all parties involved.

Our wonderfully exciting world of music has greater, more significant potential and impact on our every day lives than many of us truly realize. Music is not only an art but is also a major business.

And now is the time for orchestras, concert bands, jazz bands, marching bands, percussionist, & color guards to unite and demand that our face be recognized as legitimately as our cousin industries; science, technology, business, politics, etc.

Like any of the industries mentioned earlier, our world resembles a human body; a main center that has extended limbs capable of remarkable and oftentimes MAGICAL feet’s of “Awe & Splendor!”

After years of study, it is our contention that similar to business, science, technology or politics, music has a need to communicate its physical world through “Expressive or Marketed Presentation.” And these presentations are done so with an ultimate intent.

Sometimes the intent is to learn, sometimes it’s to sell an idea or a product, sometimes it’s just about the freedom of expression, but nevertheless the intent always bares an audience.

Many of us have come to ignore the true similarities or genetic materials that link our many professional identities and by doing so, have unintentionally created more distance and even ignorance about our capability to comprehendingly communicate with one another than we realize.

And as the old saying goes.. “The road to hell was paved with good intentions.”

As best described by WEBSTER’S New Twentieth Century DICTIONARY:

“MUSIC IS THE ART AND SCIENCE OF COMBINING VOCAL OR INSTRUMENTAL SOUNDS OR TONES IN VARYING MELODY, HARMONY, RHYTHM, AND TIMBRE, ESPECIALLY SO AS TO FORM STRUCTURALLY COMPLETE AND EMOTIONALLY EXPRESSIVE COMPOSITION.”

Balancing Art with Science is one of the very reason’s why music must have legitimacy in relationship to many if not all business disciplines. And just when you want to challenge the thought, just ask yourself “would Benjamin Franklin have discovered electricity without a key or a kite?” This is just one type in the array of scenarios throughout our history that have materialized our most significant accomplishments.

TODAY is the day…. That all of us at the bandstaff.com say “Thank-You” to one of mankind’s MOST cherished discoveries: MUSIC!

TODAY is the day that we ask for full involvement/support in helping to discover the full range of this thing we call MUSIC!

TODAY is the day we unleash MUSIC’S true identity and bring new hope to it’s impending future.

By fostering the truth of our history and recognizing the depth of it’s impact to man’s everyday life will be the only way for us to stand-up with integrity for what many should look at as the ultimate lost “Kung Fu Art!”

In the immortal words of Anaiis Nin:

“Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage!”

Saving Music

by 12. June 2009 08:40

Saving music has become a social responsibility.  Without a communal effort music would slowly disappear and stop existing in the way it does now.  If we left it to our government, music would slowly be cut from our schools.

I was doing a little searching around and stumbled into VH1. I started reading about all of the things that they are doing to help "Save the Music" in our schools.  VH1's Save the Music Foundation is dedicated to restoring instrumental music programs to ensure that all children have access to a complete education.  I was surprised that their initiatives were so developed on many levels.  At their site, you can educate yourself on the issues surrounding the subject.  They also have links to MENC Music Educators National Conference and NAMM National Association of Music Merchants who are the authorities when it comes to music education.

We should all take a little bit of the load and do our part.  We can start by educating ourselves.  Here is a link provided by Save the Music.
